In an unexpected statement, Wal-Mart has announced that Asda president and chief executive Andy Bond will step down from his duties at the supermarket chain after five years of service.
Bond will continue in his current role until a replacement is found at which point he will take up the part-time position of chairman of the company’s executive committee.
Andy Bond said: “I’m very proud to have led Asda for the past five years and helped it find a new confidence to serve its customers better. We have a strong leadership team that’s fully engaged in the business, and I’m looking forward to working with the new chief executive to build upon the foundation we’ve put in place for continued success.”
Asda has now begun the search for a new chief executive and has said it will consider both internal and external candidates.
