According to the latest TNS grocery market share figures, Wm Morrison has seen the fastest year-on-year growth of the big four supermarkets.
Supermarket giant Tesco reported a fall in market share from 31.1% last year to 30.8% over the same time period this year. Morrison’s share of the market grew 7.9% to 11.6%, with Sainsbury’s recording an equally impressive 7.8% to total a 16.3% share. Asda continues to hold second place of the big four, accounting for 17.1% of the market.
The TNS figures also showed that Waitrose has shown signs of improvement since launching a new “Essentials” range to prevent customers from trading down to lower-end stores. Growth at the upmarket chain stood at 4% in the 12 weeks to 17 May.
The hard discounters such as Aldi and Lidl, however, has started to slow, accounting for 6.1% of the market – a growth of just 0.2% from last year.
