Supergroup’s Sales Slow Down in January

Supergroup, owner of the Superdry and Cult brands, has reported a slowdown in sales during January of this year, following a strong Christmas period.

Retail sales for the 13 weeks to 29th January grew 27.8% to £78.5m and like-for-like trading increased 4.4%, and much of this growth came from the Christmas period, as sales in the last three weeks of January declined from their 2011 level.

The group’s chief executive, Julian Dunkerton, said, “Retail sales during the quarter have been mixed, with a challenging last three weeks of January. Whilst we continue to expand our retail, wholesale and internet business, our focus in the coming year will be on rolling out our new ranges in the UK and internationally and making improvements to the operational side of our business”.

The group’s second quarter was hampered by the botched implementation of a warehouse IT system upgrade, which left stores short of stock and sparked a profit warning. However, the group has continued with its expansion, and has opened four new stores in key locations. It now trades from 76 UK standalone stores and 74 concessions. Full-year profit before tax is now expected to be between £50m and £54.1m.
